Poland Deepens Defense Ties with Canada Amid US Security Uncertainty

(MENAFN) Poland is expanding its defense partnerships by strengthening cooperation with Canada, as Warsaw moves to reduce its reliance on the United States for security guarantees, according to reports.

During talks in Ottawa on Wednesday, Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz met with Canadian Defense Minister David McGuinty to discuss closer cooperation in the defense industry, including arms production links and Canada’s involvement in the European Union’s Security Action for Europe (SAFE) defense financing program.

Following the discussions, Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized Canada’s growing role in European security, stating: “Canada is closer to Europe than ever before,” and adding that Ottawa “is taking -- and will continue to take -- greater responsibility for Europe’s security.” He also noted that both sides explored Canadian investment in Poland’s defense sector, potential procurement from Polish manufacturers, and possible Polish investments in Canada.

Poland’s increased outreach reflects a broader strategy to diversify its security partnerships beyond its longstanding dependence on the United States.

As part of this approach, Warsaw is also deepening ties with other European allies, including the United Kingdom and France. On the same day as the Ottawa talks, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk visited London to sign a new bilateral defense and security agreement focused on threats such as Russia, cybersecurity risks, hybrid warfare, and missile defense.

The Canada track aligns with ongoing diplomatic engagement between the two countries. In May, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met with Tusk during the European Political Community summit in Armenia, where discussions included cooperation in energy, aerospace, and defense sectors. Carney also extended an invitation for Tusk to visit Canada later in the year.

Earlier this year, Canada supported Poland’s entry into the G7 Rapid Response Mechanism, designed to counter foreign information manipulation and interference. According to reports, both sides have also explored collaboration in areas including nuclear and wind energy, critical minerals, and defense-industrial projects under the EU’s SAFE framework.
