EAEU Concludes Free Trade Pact with Indonesia

(MENAFN) Leaders of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) finalized a free trade accord with Indonesia during a summit convened in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Following the gathering of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council—the union’s highest governing body—20 agreements were endorsed, according to a Kremlin statement issued on Sunday.

Among these was a trade pact described as, “between the Eurasian Economic Union and its member states, on the one hand, and the Republic of Indonesia, on the other hand.”

The summit began with a limited-format meeting attended by the presidents of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan, alongside Armenia’s prime minister.

Later, a broader session welcomed Uzbekistan’s president, as well as the ambassadors of Cuba and Iran to Russia. Indonesia’s Trade Minister, Budi Santoso, also participated in the council’s discussions, the Kremlin noted.

The EAEU itself was established under a treaty signed in May 2014, which came into effect in January 2015. Its full members include Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia. Four nations—Cuba, Iran, Moldova, and Uzbekistan—hold observer status.

Meanwhile, Moldova has been pursuing membership in the European Union since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in February 2022. It was granted candidate status later that year, and in December 2023, the European Council agreed to initiate accession talks with Chisinau.
